
Fortwood Center has been serving adults in the Chattanooga area for 60 years. Our psychiatrists, licensed counselors and trained healthcare professionals understand the complexities of mental health and how to deal with these challenges. Through a detailed evaluation and treatment plan, <Fortwood Center helps adults re-engage in family, work, school, and assume responsibility for managing their lives.
Adult’s Programs Include:

Fortwood Center’s Mitchell Home is an 8-bed transitional, short-term stay facility specifically targeting homeless mentally ill adults. The program transitions residents from a street or shelter environment to a structured, educational one that provides independent living skills training. The staff works closely with each resident in devising and implementing a personalized treatment plan, created to address their particular pathway to successful independent living.

Fortwood Center’s Long Term Care Program is a model of community mental health services provided to the adult population with severe and persistent mental illness, which are in need of supervised residential housing upon discharge from Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute.
Long Term care services offers a more cost efficient approach for patients of Moccasin Bend who have formerly required long term hospitalization, lasting months or years. Our case managers work with residents on a daily basis, helping them develop and implement a recovery plan that is holistic in nature. When ready, the client is transitioned to a more independent facility.

From its beginning in 1994, has adhered to the philosophy that because its members have experienced mental illness they are able to support each other as peers. The fact that the peer support staff consists of people who have conquered mental health challenges makes the Lighthouse a unique mental health facility.
The staff’s insight and personal experience help design a safe harbor for functional adults who have experienced mental illness and seek to achieve a higher level of personal development. Social and emotional support, community education events, and opportunities to learn from others living with mental illness all combine to build a healthy and optimistic environment for members of the Lighthouse.

Fortwood Center’s addresses the needs of adults 18 years or older in Hamilton County who find themselves in an acute mental health crisis. A mental health crisis is defined as a life threatening or non-life threatening emergency that could evolve into a life-threatening situation. The service is comprised of a 24-hour mobile CRT team component, as well as CRT members, who are available at our adult services building during business hours, making the team accessible to walk-in clients.
